Blog for festival and events

Event Chosen

The event I chose was the Worldwide Festival. I chose this festival as Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival was voted as “THE Best Outdoor Event in 2008” by JUICE magazine , the Worldwide Fest has 4 blissful days of music mayhem planned out across various venues for 2009. I went for the 7 May 2009 WF Exclusive Opening held at the Singapore Art Museum. The exclusive opening has acts from all around the world such as, firstly, the man who created this festival Gilles Peterson (UK) and other DJs such as Taylor Mcferrin (US), Lefto (BE), Simbad (FR), The Stoned Revivals live & unplugged (SG), Funk Bastard (SG).

Comparing with a similar festival: Glade Festival 2009
A similar festival to be compared to the Worldwide Festival is the Glade Festival. Glade Festival is an electronic dance music festival which originally started out as a stage at Glastonbury Festival. However due to the overwhelming popularity for this genre of music, it became a festival in its own right in 2004. The annual festival takes place in England for three days in the summer and attracted around 16,500 people in 2007. The best of non-mainstream dance music DJs come together for 4 days of musical bliss. Glade Festival won Best Dance Festival at the 2008 UK Festival Awards and is a 10,000 capacity event, visited by dance music and free spirited afficionados from around the world also, they attract DJs from all corners of the world which makes it a perfect comparison for the Worldwide Festival.

Marketing Mix Strategy

Product
The product is what the customers need, want , and will pay for. The Worldwide Festival product was the music the DJs from around the world had created. The people who came for one or all of the events in the Worldwide Festival, be it the opening nights, or in one of the clubs or the beach weekender. The main purpose was to experience the new music from the international DJs had to offer. Personally, this was an eye opener for me, being a non-clubbing youth, I had always perceived dance music to be annoying sounds with high and low pitches which made me wonder how can people dance to its beat, I could not even stand it. However, after this festival, I was made aware of how sophisticated the sounds from the turntable can be. Seeing the DJs spinning and grooving to their beats, making musical masterpieces every time they changed the beat from jazz to house to electronic to funk mash up. I gained an experience which changed my perception of dance music . I even enjoy listening to the beats now. I believe the Worldwide Festival has fullfilled its purpose which is to expose festival goers to new types of dance music, which will not only change their perceptions about it, but to make them a fan of that music.

Left0 warming up the crowd at the courtyard

Similarly, the Glade Music Festival is a music festival with big stages, little stages, outdoor dancefloors, cabaret, circus, healing area, boutique camping, magical markets, cocktail bars and pyrotechnics. This entire festival is set to the sound track of cutting edge electronica mixed with rap, retro and acoustic. Although both Worldwide Festival and Glade Festival are about music, they are different to some extent. The Worldwide Festival is to expose international dance music to people from the other side of the globe. This will make them appreciate these sounds and educate them about these new beats. However, the Glade Festival has been around since 2004, it’s a leader in creating new electronic beats. Hence, one is to educate, the other is to create new dimensions to dance music.

Place

The Worldwide Festival is a 4 day long festival held over many different locations in Singapore; Ranging from Singapore Arts Museum to Zirca Mega Club to Sentosa’s Siloso Beach. I went for the Opening Night which was held at the Singapore Arts Museum. Since Singapore Art Museum is situated at Bras Basah Road, which is in the city area, the accessibility to the event was effortless, contributed by the availability of public transport services (Buses & MRT) which were in close proximity to the event location. The accommodation for participants was also a factor that needed to be taken into consideration, seeing that majority of them were renowned international DJs. These DJs were housed in sponsor M Hotel which was situated near the museum. This hotel is a luxurious hotel in the Financial District area of Singapore which was convenient for the DJs when they went from one venue to another. For the Opening Night, the main stage was set up in the glass hall chapel of the museum. Since it was a small glass room, there was a sense of intimacy between the DJ and the people there. This is a rare opportunity as clubs are usually packed filled with people and since the clubbers are just having a good time with their friends, they do not really catch the different vibes and beats of the music. At the Singapore Art Museum, that was a rare moment where a clubber can truly appreciate the art of the music produced by the DJ. I was fortunate enough to be in that room and be able to catch every little genre the DJ threw in from funk to electronic to madrap.

In contrast, the Glades Festival is held in Winchester, which is in south east England. This location was chosen as they organisers needed a large open countryside area where there can be more stages and mini villages within the festival hosting a huge variation of acts. There are 16 stages and over 84 bars and markets in this festival and the people who visit the festival for the 4 days can stay at camps which are free of charge. Also, people can bring their campervans or caravans with them too. The place is accessible too as there are coaches and trains. The Glades Festival is a major event where thousands of people throng in with their camping bags for a weekend of musical bliss. There are stages everywhere around the campsite and the people are allowed to walk in the arena anytime. However, just like the Worldwide Festival, the objective of the Glades Festival 2009 is to create an intimacy between the people and the music produced by the DJs. This is why there are so many small stages set around the campsites where the festival goers will be living.

Price
As mentioned above, there were various venues where the Worldwide Festival took place. The price varied for the different locations. Also, there were beverages and drinks on sale, however at a higher price. At the Opening Night, it cost $6 just for a can of Red Bull! Here is the list of prices of the different events

Advance At-the-Door
WF Opening Night $18 $25

WF Live in the Lion City $60 $75

WF Beach Weekender $45 $55

The Beach Weekender was the last event of the Worldwide Fest and it was an all-ages event. It was held at Siloso Beach, Café Del Mar and it was Singapore’s first 24-hour marathon musical adventure where the world’s most exciting live and DJ acts went head to head for the first time in Singapore.
In my opinion the prices are affordable even as a student with no fixed income. For a major event like the WF Beach Weekender is affordable considering the long list of international live and DJ acts which performed.

At the Glades Festival, the tickets for the 4-day festival cost 125 pounds. Ticket Sales are available online. The campervan tickets, this tickets enable you to bring your own caravan and stay in the comforts of your caravan instead of camping in a tent, were sold out only days after they are released for sale and it was priced 40 pounds. This shows the extent of popularity of this festival. Also, 125 pounds is around S$300.( Using a currency converter) Also, for students, a ticket price is only 100 pounds.I believe that for 4 days of a festival with 16 stages, over 380 international performers and 85 bars and markets, free camping, thousands of friendly music lovers, the festival is worth the 100 pounds.

Partnerships

Worldwide Festival 2009 was brought to Singapore by FestivalSG. Its official website is http://www.festivalsg.org/. This festival was brought in by an independent firm and was not supported by Singapore Toursim Board. Which means it did not have fundings and allowance on venues. Partnerships with government agencies like STB helps an event to a success due to the advertisement STB provides on its websites or on any other promotional tool. Also, support and a stamp of approval by the government plays a crucial part for a festival as there will be fundings and venues sponsored by the government which will be provided for the festival. It also enables the event organisers to package their event better to cater to other target segments. For example, cheaper ticket prices, will attract more tertiary students.Even without any financial backing from STB, Worldwide Festival fully utilised its 28 sponsors and managed to be a very successful event.

There were special privileges provided by DBS Cardmembers. The priveleges were 15% off ticket prices for both advance or at the door prices , 20% off Drinks Discounts , exclusive entry to VIP tents which included free flow of drinks from 4pm onwards on the WF Beach Weekender.

Similarly, Glades Festival is also not a government funded festival. However, originally a part of the Glastonbury Festival, it has a number supporters. However, this is a sponsor-free event. They have partnerships with Clubs, Magazines, Radio Stations and Drink Companies. This huge number partners will benefit the festival through means such as funding, advertising & the supply of partners' merchandise to the festival. Hence, they can lower their prices as these partners also benefit from the festival.

Promotion

Promotion refers to the ‘specific mix of advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, and public relations a company uses to pursue its advertising and marketing objectives’.
Worldwide Festival was advertised by various promotional tools even though, as mentioned above, it did not have any backing from the government. It used more of public relations to promote itself. Personally, being a non-clubber, I got to know of the Worldwide Festival from The Straits Time, Life section, where there was an article about Mr Gilles Peterson. It was an interesting article which informed me about what the Worldwide Festival was about and what is going to happen during the 4 days of the festival. Without the article, I would not have an inkling that such a festival was in Singapore. This shows that strategic public relations between the journalist and the event organiser are important as it may either make or break the event. PR has more impact on readers when they are in the form of articles in respected magazines or newspaper publications. People tend to trust articles in the magazines or newspapers which they frequently read. This way it is more cost-effective as the journalist has to just write about the event and it does not cost much to the event organiser. Also, the Worldwide Festival media partners were radio station Lush 99.5FM, MTV and JUICE magazine. With such recognised and respected Media Partners, the listeners or readers would come to know of the Worldwide Festival. The press releases and radio interviews with Mr. Gilles Peterson, the creator of the Worldwide Festival increases the media attention of the festival. Also, through word of mouth, clubbers in Singapore got to know about the coming of the Worldwide Festival in Singapore. Also, Worldwide Festival’s website ( http://www.worldwidefestival.com/singapore.php ) has all the information about the happenings of the festival, also the price and the venue of the various events.

In the case of the Glades Festival, as mentioned above, it was part of the Glastonbury Festival before. Glastonbury is the world’s biggest music festival and it is already very well known around the world. This festival attracts throngs of visitors from other countries. There is not much need of advertising needed. People know about the event through past experiences, word-of-mouth and through the festivals website. As it is already a well known event, tickets are sold online. The tickets too sell like hotcakes, usually being sold a few months before the opening day of the festival. Due to the already exisiting huge fan base, it does not need to do much promotion. Also, all the festival information is on their interactive website. http://www.gladefestival.com/

People

People refer to the interaction between customers, the settings, staff and the volunteers and the other people who are involved in the festival. This constitutes a larger part of the event experience. The Worldwide Festival is not a service orientated festival; it was mostly about the DJs and their music. However, there was some service staff who was serving the guests drinks and food. The food was complimentary from the festival organisers. There were dishes such as foie gras, tuna, Kobe beef and buttered shrimps. These foods were given in spoons and just as appetisers. I did not expect to be served food during the festival and I was pleasantly surprised when I was served the delicious food. This shows that the event organiser took the initiative to think ahead. This little gesture shows the efficiency of the event organiser in planning & organizing the event. Also, the service staffs were patient and took pains to answer my queries about the festival. An example was when I was asked the chef who was busy preparing the food, for a picture, she stopped her work and obliged for the picture with a smile. Then, she engaged in small talk about why I was there and asked if I was enjoying myself, then, she politely excused herself and continued with her work. This experience heightened my perception of the service staff at the Worldwide Festival. Also, the man himself, Mr. Gilles Peterson was humble and modest as I chatted with him for awhile. To top the perfect day out, I had the chance to take a photo with him. This truly made the experience at the Worldwide Festival truly magical.

Similarly, Glades Festival for the people involve in the festival include the organizers, workers, participating brands, performers and guests. I believe the hospitality there too is top notch since it is a festival visited by thousands of visitors. Also, since the Glades Festival has been going on since 2004, the service provided by the people there, from the musicians, circus acts, pyrotechnics, to the Food and Beverage staff is top notch. This is one of the reasons why people keep going to this festival every year.

Programming

The programming at the Worldwide Festival was all about the music. There were live acts by The Stoned Revivals. This is a local music group which are popular in the South East Asia region. They were playing their favourite songs in acoustic. They were there to hype up the crowd. They got the crowd to play some musical instruments with them. Next, there came the human beatbox, Taylor Mcferrin. He is the son of the Legendary Bobby McFerrin, Taylor McFerrin is redefining the term “one-man show.” Combining his skills as a producer and performer, Taylor is making music heads around the world take notice with his Vocals, Fender Rhodes, synthesizers, samples, and beat boxing. Outside, at the courtyard, there was Left0, a DJ from Belgium. Overall, the programming was a bit disappointing as there were 2 DJs playing at the same time, one was in the glass room chapel, the other in the courtyard. It was confusing for me as I wanted to listen to them both, however, I had to choose one. Hence, having one DJ play at a time would have been better.

Glades Festival has a long list of programmes jammed pack in 4 days. As mentioned above, there are 300 International Artists performing. They are not only musicians but pyrotechnics, circus , other arts. This show is not only restricted to dance music but a whole festival feeling with good music.

Packaging and Distribution

The Worldwide Festival had no special packages. The only exception was the Worldwide Festival Advance Double Day pass which were being sold at $90. As mentioned at the Price segment, there were incentives for DBS cardholders. That was the only packaging available at the festival; the tickets were sold at the entrance or advanced at a first come first serve basis.
The Worldwide Festival did have interesting distribution techniques thought, the events were held at different locations such as firstly, the Singapore Arts Museum, then at different clubs such as Zirca, and lastly at Siloso Beach. This gave the clubbers a different atmosphere to groove to the music.
I feel that the Worldwide Festival has a great potential to grow as this year is the second year its been held in Singapore. Apart from locals, there were many expatriates who came down to enjoy the music. Hence, I believe with better funding from the government, this festival will be able to attract tourists to Singapore.

Glades Festival is packaged in such a way where the festival goers will be surrounded by music even when they go to bed. This is because there will be small stages set around the camping area of the festival goers. It is packaged really well as the intimacy will be there. Also, with 16 stages and over 380 artists, there will be a huge variety of music around the festival, which will cater to most of the people’s taste.

Best Practices
Worldwide Festival
The Best practice in my opinion is the wonderful service staff at the Worldwide Festival. I was pleasantly surprised when we were offered the food such as foie gras, Kobe beef, tuna, and the buttered shrimps. It is not the best practice just because I got offered free food but it was truly a wonderful surprise. Also, I was dressed in a hooded jacket, jeans and simple shoes. The other people who were there were dressed immaculately. So, it was a surprise that he would serve me instead of the better dressed people in the courtyard. Hence, it is one of the best practices in my opinion.
Secondly, it was the music of the Worldwide Festival, as stated above, I used to avoid dance music of all type as I perceived it as nonsensical and incoherent noise. However, the Worldwide Festival exposed me to the different type of dance music. I had no idea dance music had many genres from house to mad rap to funk mash to jazz to electronic, throw in some beat boxing and you will have a true work of art. Worldwide Festival turned me from a hater to a fan of this type of music.

Lastly, another best practice is how the Worldwide Festival involves youths in this festival. There was T-shirt designing contest organised by FestivalSG for tertiary students. It is a good practice as it involves students from schools to this festival; this creates a better awareness for this festival and also gives the students a platform to shine and show off their creativity. The students who won were from ITE and they received a certificate from the creator of the Worldwide Festival, Mr. Gilles Peterson.

Glades Festival

The Glades Festival best practice is their packaging and distribution. They have over 380 international artists who are going to perform at the 16 stages in this 4 day festivals. Also, I like it how the festival is being held in a huge countryside where there are not restrictions on sound limits and the artists are free to use as much space as they can. Also, the festival goers will be living in tents all over the festival area. This is the unique factor of this festival. The festival goers will be able to experience different acts all throughout their 4 days. Also, there will be small stages set along their campsites which will be there to allow the festival goers to be up close and personal with the artists.

Main Purpose of the Event

Worldwide Festival is to showcase the hottest and latest experimental acts in dance music, encourage inspiring DJs out there to be bold with their sounds. This is also the chance to share the dance music around the world.
The Worldwide Festival is also the break the stereotype of Singapore as being a city which is all about work and no play. This festival exposes Singapore to the new dance music which also shows Singapore as a hip place for clubbers.
The Worldwide Festival too was a good way for the sponsors to advertise their products. For example, the official party spirit, Bacardi had a huge ball with its logo on the top of it being displayed in the main courtyard where the music was being played. This shows the amount of exposure the sponsors can get from sponsoring such events.
Lastly, the main purpose of the event was to educate and inform people of the new dance music around the globe. This helps to remove the stigma that dance music is only for clubbers but for everyone else too.

Tourism Benefits

The Worldwide Festival was a success. There were tourists who visited the different events as well as expatriates. Furthermore, it not only received monetary benefits from their tickets sales but it also breaks the stereotype of Singapore being a monotonous city. The Worldwide Festival promotes Singapore as a city which never sleeps and has a great nightlife. Also, 24 hour beach party was a success. This shows that Singapore is now ready to host such 24 hour hour parties or similar events. The Worldwide Festival is a festival which puts Singapore in the driving seat as the premier clubbing destination in Asia, as this was the first Worldwide Festival in Asia. With this, Singapore will truly be Asia’s number 1 destination.
